Yes, there are actually things that you can do to optimise your blog post for search engines. Thinking about these things beforehand will not only save you time but also help your post rank for your keywords.
Part of your preparation for creating your post is being clear about the keywords that you would like to focus on for that post. For this post, for example, my keywords are "on-page SEO tips."
While the tips here are mainly for posts, they are applicable to pages on your site as well.
You can use our 12 on-page SEO tips below as a checklist when writing your blog post.
The title is the most important on-page SEO item so make sure that your keyword is there.
Starting the title with your keywords is ideal. The nearer your keywords at the start of the title the better.
Use short URLs that are descriptive of your topic. Keep it simple and easy for the user to remember. Ensure that you use your keywords as well.
By the way, URLs are also called slugs and they are the second most important factor in search engine optimisation.
Meta descriptions help search engine robots and users know what your post is all about. Make sure you drop your keywords or a version of it here.
Search engines usually cut your snippet around the 160-character mark so make your descriptions between 150 to 160 characters long.
Put your keywords within the first 100 words of your post so search engines can easily determine what your post is all about.
Do not over use your keywords, just drop it naturally in your post. Avoid looking spammy as search engines do not like spammy sites.
We want search engine robots to easily navigate our post or page and understand what it is about so they would know if our post or page is relevant for particular keywords. Using H1 and H2 tags gives structure to our post for easy navigation.
H1 tags are used in your post title and H2 tags on your subheadings. If you could use your keyword on one of your H2 tags, the better.
Making use of infographics, photos or videos in your posts engages your audience more which will most likely make them stay longer on your site.
How long people stay on your site is one of the factors search engines look into when ranking your site.
Internal links are hyperlinks to other posts or pages on the same website. They give structure to the site and allow link juice or power to be spread to other parts of the site.
The best example of internal linking would probably be Wikipedia, but of course by the nature of their site they could get away with it.
At least one but no more than five internal links are recommended per post or page.
Outbound links are similar to internal links but they link out to other related sites. This helps search engines like Google know what your post or page is about. For example, a dentist's site had this at the bottom of their hompage, each of which links out to the respective websites:
Keep these at a minimum but link out to sites who have authority and are trust-worthy.
Using words or phrases related to your keywords increases your post's relevancy to Google.
In SEO language, this is also called LSI.
To optimise your photos, make sure that at least one of them has a file name that is the same as your keyword. Also, fill out the Alt Text area of the photo with the keyword.
Post useful, entertaining or interesting information so people will naturally gravitate to your site and want to share your post with others.

Stick to the main ones though and those relevant to your industry as they can sometimes increase load times of your post or page.
That's it! Remember not to go crazy with any one of the items as you could get over-optimised and get the opposite of what you want from search engine optimisation.
